3 Reasons You Keep Failing at Diets (& it’s Not What You Think)

Let’s be real for a second.

You know how this goes.

You start a new diet, and for the first few days (or weeks), everything feels amazing.

You’re eating ‘clean’ following the rules, maybe even hitting the gym consistently.

You feel in control.

But then… something happens.

Maybe you had a stressful day at work. Maybe you were out with friends and gave in to a slice of cake. Maybe you just felt exhausted and couldn’t resist ordering pizza instead of making the meal you had planned.

And suddenly, it feels like everything is ruined.

You tell yourself, Well, I’ve already messed up. Might as well go all in and start fresh on Monday.

So you eat everything in sight, promising that come Monday, you’ll ‘get serious’ again.

Sound familiar?

If so, you’re not alone. And it’s not your fault.

This cycle…

The start diet/ eating Clea/ eating healthy, restrict, mess up, binge, start over on Monday cycle…

it’s keeping you stuck.

That’s right. The very thing you are doing to try and lose weight and ‘be healthy’ is causing you to fail and even binge eat.

But here’s the good news: you can break free from it for good.

Let’s talk about the three biggest reasons why you keep falling off track, and exactly what you can do to stop the cycle forever.

1. You’re Stuck in the All or Nothing Mindset

Ever feel like you’re either 100% on track or completely off the rails?

One “bad” meal turns into a weekend of overeating.
Missing a workout means skipping exercise altogether for the week.
Having a stressful day means screw it—I’ll start fresh next week.

That’s the all or nothing mindset in action.

And it’s one of the biggest reasons you keep yo-yoing back and forth.

Why This Mindset Keeps You Stuck

The all or nothing mindset convinces you that:

  • If you can’t follow your plan perfectly, you’ve failed.
  • If you eat one ‘bad’ thing, you might as well go all out because you’ve ruined it.
  • If you can’t do the full workout, there’s no point in doing anything at all.

But here’s the truth: perfection is keeping you stuck.

Think about it: the women who actually reach their weight loss goals and maintain it do not go on plans or do diets.

They build habits.

Not only that they take a more flexible approach to eating. Realising that life doesn’t always go to plan, they build easy, doable routines that become doable.

Most importantly they  forgive themselves if something doesn’t go as planned and move on.

They know progress isn’t about being perfect, it’s about being consistent most of the time.

2. You’re Relying on Willpower Instead of Habits

At the start of every diet, you feel motivated and in control.

You say things like:
‘This time, I’m sticking to it’.

‘I just need to be more disciplined’.

‘If I try hard enough, I can do this’.

And for a while, it works.

Until it doesn’t.

Because willpower is a limited resource.

When you’re stressed, tired, overwhelmed, or just done with following rules… your willpower runs out.

That’s why by the end of the day, you suddenly find yourself reaching for chocolate, wine, or anything in sight, because your brain is exhausted from self control.

The women who actually create lasting change?

They don’t rely on willpower.

They rely on building easy, realistic and simple routines and habits that become automatic.

So eating healthy consistently doesn’t require obsession and thinking about food all the time.

It becomes easy and something they do without thinking.

3. You Haven’t Beat With You Emotional or Binge Eating

If you find yourself eating:

  • Much more rapidly than normal
  • Until feeling uncomfortably full
  • Large amounts of food when not physically hungry
  • Alone due to embarrassment about the amount of food consumed
  • Until feel disgusted, depressed, or guilty after overeating

Then this needs to be addressed before you want to lose weight.

Otherwise you will never stick to any diet, meal plan or healthy habits.

It doesn’t matter how much willpower you have, I can’t stress to you enough that you need to deal with emotional and binge eating before you attempt to lose weight.

And it must be done in a way that doesn’t trigger your binge eating.

Final Thoughts: You’re Not Failing! Diets are Failing You!

There are far more than three reasons why diets are failing you, but I’d need an entire book!

Diets are boring, restrictive, awful (I’m trying not to swear!). But seriously… if they worked, we wouldn’t have an obesity crisis.

There’s thousands of books, weight loss plans, fitness plans. Yet, as a country, the more and more plans come out, the more and more overweight people become.

That’s not a coincidence. Research shows that the more women yo yo diet, the more weight they put on in the long run.

Diets are causing weight problems and not only that, they are contributing to disordered eating behaviours in women.

And no, medicalised starvation in the form of weight loss jabs are not the answer.

You absolutely can eat healthy without dieting, lose weight if you want to, overcome binging and stop the constant food noise but you need the right approach.

Health Coaching is the right approach. Research has shown that people consistently get better long term results with health coaching than they do with diets and new research on weight loss jabs are showing that combining them with health coaching is what keeps weight off long term).

You do not have to keep doing the same thing over and over and hoping for a different result.
